River-deck casinos

River-deck casinos have become increasingly popular in the United States in recent years. In modern times the first state to open a river-deck casino was Iowa, when that state’s legislature passed legislation permitting them in 1989. Other states that now allow river-deck casinos to operate include Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, India and Missouri.

Most of these river-deck casinos cruise on major rivers such as the Mississippi, Des Plaines, Ohio and Illinois rivers. However, some river-deck casinos are permanently moored. In fact, Mississippi requires that all its river-deck casinos be permanently docked on barges, with gangplank access provided for customers. Each state that currently allows river-deck casinos to operate has its own specific rules prescribing such aspects as the hours of operation, locations, number of licenses issued, types of gambling to be allowed, and whether or not gambling may take place before the riverboat begins to move.
